*UPDATED The Libby ASOS is OTS and to be decommissioned. Current weather is available on the ATIS to include when the tower is closed. the ATIS will continue to broadcast the same weather throughout the hour unless there is a significant change. Hence, the FMQ-23 is conducting hourly observations unless a significant in weather occurs. If the weather changes, the system will conduct a Special Observation and update the ATIS.. (Check the windsocks. Note that there is no mid-field wind sensor, so exercise caution with SW winds. - ed.)

To fly VFR into KFHU/Libby AAF/Sierra Vista Muni, Have the current sectional on-board, Listen to ATIS well outside the Restricted Airspace and then call Libby Approach on 127.05. You must receive a clearance to enter into the Restricted Airspace.. Approach will provide positive control instructions if the Restricted Airspace is active.. If the tower is closed, the ATIS will tell you to announce your intentions on 124.95 and the Restricted Airspace is not active.. Normal entry is via the "North-Y" below 7000' and is readily used for easy access into KFHU. We have great and very user friendly controllers at KFHU. Come on down and try it out! KFHU on AirNav. I could give (more than) a couple of examples, but I will go with this one. Early on in my Mooney owning career, I flew the plane to my hometown area in the Black Hills of SD. After a nice visit, it was time to depart the nice little Spearfish, SD airport, runway heading North West. As I departed on said date and time, I knew my rancher brother-in-Law, my Sister and Nephew would be outside watching, only 6 miles away, for my departing flight. So, yes I buzzed them, more than once, the feedlot cattle didn’t seem to mind and there were no other houses near by and, well was I below 1000’, absolutely! Did I go below 500’, I don’t think so, but here is where the title statement comes from. Have you ever noticed,….when you initiate more extraverted flying procedures, sometimes you move down the scale of good airplane driving.
Is it the buzzing I am berating myself about….no, not really. I didn’t harm anyone, I watched my airspeed and frankly it was enjoyable (although I don’t recommend this). However, when I take off, my
after takeoff mnemonic is, gear up, flaps, climb power set, wheel and flap indicators closed, cowl flaps set and check instruments.
With said buzzing complete and as I was climbing out and ready to call Ellsworth AFB Control for my clearance, I noticed…I never made it much past take off item #2, flaps up. Oops. Let the self-counseling begin.
Where I am going with this little note is, when you are flying with other than your normal copilot/wife/buddy, riding with someone new, or flying outside your normal envelope for external purposes, we or at least I, have been known to get improperly distracted, and not pay attention to job #1. Fly the airplane. We get focused on showing off the beautiful Huachuca Mountains, the beautiful town of Huachuca City or a host of other key sights. The result could be…you forgot something: Fully flying the plane.
As such and knowing my propensity to goof up in the extravert mode, I actually counsel myself to pay extra attention to job #1, fly the plane. Look at the engine instruments more, double check flaps and or other items more, before communicating…check first and then look at the lavender Pit.
Remember to first fly, and then show a good time to your passenger or other activity. That will make the flight something really good to remember, vs…. the opposite. Don’t be saying, oops up there.
